FREE Home Battery Storage for Australians: What Does it Mean for You?

Discover what free home battery storage means for Australians, how it works, and the key benefits it offers to help you save on energy costs and improve home efficiency.

The Australian Federal Government has announced a $2.3 billion investment in home battery systems. The aim is to support Australia's transition to clean energy and ease demand on the national electricity grid by helping households store the solar power they generate during the day and use it in the evening. For many homes the rebate is large enough to cover the entire cost of the battery, which is why it is being described as free home battery storage for Australians.

This post explains how the rebate works, what it could be worth to you, and how the Greencharge GH-B16 large-format battery from Greenhse Technologies fits into the program. Read more on the Federal Government Cheaper Home Battery Program page.

How the rebate works

Homeowners can now access rebates of up to $370 per kWh of battery capacity for batteries certified by the Clean Energy Council. The incentive is delivered through Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STCs), the same mechanism that has supported rooftop solar for years. STCs are created when an eligible system is installed and are normally assigned to the installer or retailer, who passes the value on as an upfront discount on the quoted price. You do not need to apply separately or wait for a cheque.

The rebate is not fixed. It will gradually reduce from July 2025 through July 2030, so the earlier a system is installed, the higher the discount. Read more on STCs to see how the certificate value is calculated.

What a home battery actually does

A solar system without storage exports surplus energy to the grid during the day, usually for a small feed-in credit, and then buys power back at a much higher rate at night. A battery captures that surplus and releases it after sunset, so more of your own solar is used at home. Larger capacity means more evening and overnight demand can be covered, and it also allows the battery to take part in grid support programs.

Why choose Greenhse Technologies?

Greenhse Technologies has secured premium large-format batteries designed for maximum efficiency and reliability. The systems are available in 16, 32 and 48 kWh sizes and qualify for rebates that can cover the entire cost of the battery. A 16 kWh unit suits a typical family home with solar, while 32 and 48 kWh configurations suit larger homes, homes with electric vehicles or pool heating, and households that want to maximise their return from the rebate and from virtual power plant participation.

Installation is available in the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth metro areas.

How the GH-B16 battery system works

The Greencharge GH-B16 Battery is:

  • VPP (Virtual Power Plant) ready: energy providers can tap into stored energy when demand on the grid peaks, and pay you for it.
  • Compatible with most low-voltage hybrid inverters: it can usually be connected to an existing solar inverter, making installation seamless.

This means you benefit in two ways:

  • Upfront savings of up to $17,760 ($370 x 48 kWh) through the rebate.
  • Ongoing returns of up to $750 per year from VPP participation, depending on your system and location.

That is a potential $2,000 to $2,600 per battery in added value over time, on top of the everyday savings from using your own stored solar instead of buying grid power at peak rates.

What is a virtual power plant?

A VPP links many home batteries together under software control. When the grid is under stress, for example on a hot summer evening in Perth, the energy provider can draw a small amount from each battery and pay the owners for it. Your home keeps a reserve, and the arrangement is managed automatically through the inverter and battery management system.

Why the Greenhse GH-B16 is different

Many battery systems are built by combining smaller cells or modules to reach a larger capacity. The GH-B16 is a specialist large-format battery, purpose-built for durability and performance, with fewer cells and fewer connections to manage. Key benefits include:

  • Highest-grade lithium, fully documented from source to final assembly.
  • Advanced Battery Management System that balances and regulates the cells for longer life and safety.
  • Built-in safety features protecting your home and the system.
  • 8000+ life cycles with a 10-year warranty. One cycle is a full charge and discharge, so 8000 cycles covers well beyond a decade of daily use.
  • Wide inverter compatibility, or upgrade to a 10 kW inverter at a reduced cost if your existing inverter is not suitable.

Battery installation must be carried out by a licensed electrician with the appropriate accreditation, and the system must be Clean Energy Council certified to qualify for the STC rebate. Greenhse arranges compliant installation as part of the package.

Is it right for your home?

A home battery makes the most sense when you already have solar, or are installing it at the same time, and when a good share of your electricity is used in the evening. Points to check before you commit:

  • Your current inverter model and whether it is a low-voltage hybrid unit.
  • Your daily energy use and how much of it falls outside daylight hours.
  • Whether you want to join a VPP for the extra annual return.
  • Timing, because the rebate steps down each year from July 2025 to July 2030.
