Strip lighting is one of the most versatile lighting solutions available, creating architectural features while delivering practical light. No single strip does everything, which is why more than 40 types exist. This Greenhse Technologies Perth guide covers the six factors that decide which strip lighting suits your space, then the product families we stock.
1. Length and run capability
Run length decides the voltage.
- 12V strip: higher current, shorter runs, small applications.
- 24V strip: lower current and less heat, typically up to 5 metres per run.
- Long-run 24V strip: up to 20 metres from one end or 40 metres powered from both ends, no visible voltage drop.
- 240V strip: very long runs up to 50 metres, minimal voltage drop, lower heat, no driver required.
2. Colour options
- RGB (full colour): millions of colours, though white is mixed and often looks less natural.
- CCT (tunable white): adjustable white, typically 2700K to 6500K, where flexibility is needed.
- Single colour: consistent quality white in 2700K (warm), 3000K (warm white), 4000K (neutral) or 5500K to 6000K (cool or daylight).
For quality white choose single colour or CCT; for effects choose RGB.
3. Brightness and performance
Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. More wattage generally means more light, but efficiency matters more: 150 lumens per watt or better gives more light for a lower power bill. Greenhse strips range from 7.5W/m with 700 lumens to 23W/m with over 3500 lumens per metre (a standard 8 to 10Watt downlight is about 900 lumens). Entry level is around 700 lumens/m, high performance 3500+ lumens/m. Display lighting and niches need high brightness; under-cabinet runs of 2 to 3 metres suit about 12W/m with 1800+ lumens/m. All strip lights can be dimmed for efficiency and control.
4. Quality matters
- LED density: higher density means smoother, dot-free light.
- CRI: CRI 90+ renders accurate, vibrant colours; CRI 70 is lower quality.
- PCB construction: 10mm PCB is stronger than 5mm; 3 OZ copper layers handle heat better and last longer.
- Efficiency: 160 lm/W uses far less power than 80 lm/W.
- Voltage: 24V runs cooler and outlasts 12V.
- Coatings and chip design: add durability and weather resistance and prevent light separation.
- Warranty: up to 5 years on premium strips.
5. Controllers and smart control
Single colour strip needs no controller (dimming modules are optional). CCT needs one for colour temperature, RGB for colour selection and effects. Control options: handheld remotes, wall switches, smartphone apps, voice control through Google or Alexa, sensors and automation systems.
6. Channels and installation
Aluminium channels improve heat dissipation, extend lifespan, diffuse light and give a premium architectural finish. Recessed wing channels build into cabinetry; surface-mounted suit retrofits. Finishes: aluminium, or premium black and white. Diffusers give 15% to 20% diffusion to cut glare and hide LED dots.
Choosing the right LED strip light
Our most common LED strip lighting products are all certified, high quality and budget friendly.
240V strip lighting
Best for continuous runs up to 50 metres from one supply. Low heat means no aluminium profile, no transformer and less wiring, with even colour and brightness over the full length and a tough TPU finish. RGB has full colour control and dimming with a choice of remotes; single colour can be Triac dimmable; an RGB gateway or smart dimming module adds smart control. Applications: recessed ceilings, large architectural lighting. Options: RGB, 3000K warm white, 4000K natural white, 6000K daylight.
Long-run 24V COB
Dotless COB strip running 20 metres from one end or 40 metres from both ends with no voltage drop. Thin, with short cut lengths and connectors that avoid waste up to 4 metres. Low power at 7.5W/m in IP20 or IP67 silicon injected. Applications: cabinetry, balustrades, hidden recesses, outdoors. Options: IP20 3000K, IP20 4000K, IP67 3000K.
24V RGB COB
Very bright dotless full colour with a good cool white from RGB White. Runs 5 metres, or 10 metres with both ends connected, with connectors for lengths up to 2 metres. High power at 16W/m, so needs an aluminium profile. Applications: kitchens, bars, shelving, feature recesses. Options: IP20 16W/m, IP65 15W/m with heat-shrink.
Display strip lighting 24V 23W/m
About 3800 lumens per metre, CRI above 90 for vibrant product colours, 165 lumens per watt.
24V CCT COB
Very bright dotless light adjustable from warm to cool white (2700K to 6500K). Runs 5 metres, or 10 metres from both ends, 2 metre connectors, 16W/m, aluminium profile required. Applications: under kitchen cabinets, cabinetry, bars, bulkheads, shelving, architectural features.
24V RGB SMD
High-density, stable full colour for outdoors. Runs 5 metres, or 10 metres from both ends, 16W/m, no profile needed. Applications: gardens, outdoor areas, facades, pools, water features. Options: IP67 silicon injected 16W/m, IP65 gel coated.
24V high lumen SMD
Very efficient and bright, strongest build, lifespan over 50 000 hours on a 3 OZ strip. The 12W/m option needs no aluminium channel. Runs 5 metres, or 10 metres from both ends, 2 metre connectors. Applications: under cabinets, display lighting, bathroom niches, retail. Options: IP20 23W/m CRI>90 in 4000K and warm white; IP65 silicon gel 20W/m in 4000K and 5500K; IP65 silicon gel 12W/m in 3000K, 4000K and 5500K.
Neon IP67 strip
Fully programmable colour strip for signage, feature outlines and commercial installations. Runs 5 metres from one end, power supplied every 10 metres, a data cable links multiple strips, Bluetooth controllers (no wifi needed), 12x12mm aluminium support profile. Options: RGB 12x12mm side bend in 5m and 3m; RGB 6x12mm side bend in 5m and 3m; CCT 6x12mm side bend in 10m, 5m and 3m; 3000K warm white 6x12mm side bend in 10m, 5m and 3m.
Final thoughts
Choosing strip lighting comes down to three questions: how long is the run, what colour flexibility do you need, and how bright must the space be. Answer those and the choice is simple. Done well, strip lighting does not just illuminate a space, it transforms it. Visit Greenhse Technologies, your local LED lighting store at 5/1 Locke Lane, Ellenbrook WA 6069, or call (08) 9297 2969.
